Mexican Food…. it’s My Weakness

If I had to. I could eat Mexican food…….all day…. every day. Living deep in the heart of Texas, one can’t help but indulge in Mexican food time or two…..maybe three or four! Salsa and chips….while it’s a staple in my house and I’m sure for so many others. It’s simply a must-have. I can make a meal alone out of eating only chips and salsa. But when ordering your meal at a restaurant, it’s almost mandatory to add chili con queso to go along with your chips and salsa. But keep in mind. Not everyone can make chili con queso. There are a lot of “wanna-be’s” out there. So, don’t let the name fool you. Also, don’t forget to order a little bit of guacamole. It would be simply “un-American” or maybe even “un-Texan” if you didn’t!!

Chips & Salsa…..

Chili Con Queso…

mmmmm……good!

I think that some of the best places to eat Mexican food are at some of those little “holes in the wall” restaurants. Don’t get me wrong …there are many “chain” restaurants that I simply cannot go without. Pappasitto’s Cantina is one of my favorites. They have huge portions of food. So you definitely get your monies worth. The chips, salsa, and queso are also top-notch to me. But the tests of all tests to pass for me is the cheese enchiladas (with chopped white onions on top). Pappasitto’s has passed that test. They are delicious!

So these don’t have chopped white onions on top…….and that’s just fine by me!

Then there’s Gringo’s……ohhhhhh Gringos. You must try their green sauce. But it only tastes good with their chips. Rule of thumb when you eat chips with salsa, queso and green sauce. It is that you have to eat the chips from the same restaurant that you bought the dips. Chips from another restaurant or even store-bought chips just won’t cut the butter. If you don’t believe me, then try it. My favorite meal at Gringos is the taco salad. It’s huge and worth every bite! But sharing the “Mexican food wealth” would be to share some nachos. Their ooey…..gooey….and just plain yummy!

Lupe Tortilla’s…they have the best charro beans. They bring out a bowl of hot charro beans to your table to eat along with your chips and salsa. This is a must-try!

My “All-Time” Favorite Mexican Restaurant

My all-time favorite Mexican restaurant is Monterey House. Now known as ” Monterey’s Little Mexico. This has been a favorite restaurant of mine since I was a young girl. Back in the day, there were several of these restaurants all over Houston and the surrounding areas. But times change and things and places change. Now, there is less than a handful around.

Things Remembered

When it was Monterey House, this is where I first loved to eat cheese enchiladas. They are simple, nothing fancy. But so worth the calories! Fast-forward to the present day where the restaurant is now called Monterey’s Little Mexico. Luckily the name is the only thing that has changed. Because you would be amazed to know that their cheese enchiladas taste exactly the way that I remember! Be still my heart! The chips, salsa, queso…..oh my! It’s all the same! It’s so good and brings back my childhood and teenage memories.

Cheers!

Margarita on the Rocks!

Your meal would not be complete without a Margarita. Whether you prefer it frozen or on the rocks. Strawberry or the original. Your meal never tasted so good without a cold one.
