What Is Keto Anyway?

Well, a ketogenic diet, is a high-fat, full protein, low carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used mainly to treat hard-to-control epilepsy in children. The ketogenic diet forces the body to burn fats instead of carbohydrates.

This very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet shares many similarities with low-carb diets such as The Atkins Diet. However, the Keto Diet will have you drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. Yes, you read that right…..lots of fat intake. The reduction in carbs will put your body into a metabolic state which is called, ketosis.

This is the best part. When in ketosis, your body becomes super efficient at burning fat for energy. It will also turn fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply much-needed energy for the brain. A ketogenic diet can cause a drastic reduction in blood sugar and insulin levels. This along with increased ketones has many many health benefits.

Weight Loss

I am amazed at how easy it is to lose weight when on Keto. This diet really is so filling that you don’t need to count calories or your food intake. Right at first, when I first began my keto transition, my main goal was to lose weight, not really realizing all of the other changes that my body would have. For one, I no longer take statins or blood pressure medication. My husband was a borderline diabetic, but never on medication for it. Well, he has so far lost over fifty pounds and his glucose is now completely normal. However, since changing over to the keto lifestyle…I can honestly say that it is the absolute best lifestyle change that I’ve ever made.

My Healthy Benefits

There are so many “healthy” benefits when you finally decide to take the “Keto-Plunge”. For me, I sleep so much better…I have better mental clarity, no longer on my statin (cholesterol) medication, and my blood pressure is regulated. But all of this is because I have dropped 27 pounds…and I now three pounds away from my goal weight. I no longer eat processed foods…and I’ve given up sugar….this is all so heart-healthy.

Energy…energy….energy… I really cannot stress this enough. I have so much more energy and you can too! When you’re running on ketones…you will experience less energy slumps.

Things Remembered

Keto reduces inflammation. A Keto diet can help reduce inflammation in your body by switching off a number of different inflammatory pathways.

Brain Fog...Ketosis helps to clear brain fog while creating more mitochondria (cells that will help to generate energy).

Some Of My Favorites

Avocados.…I cannot tell you enough how good avocado is with any meal.

Nuts…pecans…walnut…macadamia nuts…these are all a part of my “go-to” snack. They are so filling and very satisfying.

Peanut Butter.….nope…it’s not on the traditional keto diet….but it’s on mine! Yes…I will indulge in a spoonful…and it will satisfy my need for something sweet. Because remember….sugar is out…when converting to a keto way of life. (But I give in every now and again with a piece of Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate.

Bacon….who doesn’t love bacon? This is a staple when living a keto lifestyle. I like to use the thick-cut…fry some up extra crispy and keep in a little Ziploc sandwich baggie and keep in the fridge…it’s an excellent last-minute snack.

Cheat Day…Yes….you read that right! There are just certain things that this Texas girl cannot ever give up… chips, salsa, queso, and my cheese enchiladas…is one of them. That’s right…Mexican food.

Preaching To The Choir

I must say…going the keto way for me was a no-brainer. I needed a healthy way of living and wanted to get into better shape. I have tried on so many occasions different diets. But now….no more yo-yo….falling of the wagon dieting for me. It is my new normal for eating…and I can honestly say….that you will agree too! Once the weight starts to fall off and the inches…yes many inches will disappear. You will be so glad that you have switched to keto-living. Because like I said in my earlier post…I have tried numerous ways to lose weight…but nothing ever worked for very long. But now for me…those days are a thing of the past.

If you are ready to take the plunge…then I say go for it! You will be so glad that you did….remember this….we are never too old to fall in love…and never too old to live a healthy life.

  1. I felt as if you were speaking directly to me. I began ten days ago and was doing great until the husband cooked up a storm. Roast Chicken dinner and a desert of wild berries and thick greek youghurt. The crushed new potatoes and teaspoon of Vannilla sugar were enough to raise my guilt levels. He is such a good, kind man one many would love to have; I could but did not dissapoint him and thought it is not so bad … while knowing it was. Feeling full, guilt ridden and sad at my hard work that I had lost so easily. We snuggled up for a movie and a sharing bag of of chocolate caramel drops. This extra, is a once a week thing; that only appeared since Covid’s lock down. There is a but. It was my husbands idea (unbeknown to me) that we would have our feast then he would join me, together we wake to a fresh life and together we will travel the keto plan. My plan is to fast 16.8 hours between my last meal and my first, my reading has taught me this is the simplest most productive way to fast. Together strictly for six weeks. Then we will use the dirty Keto as our best life eating plan. The cupboards are clear grocery list filled and let us begin. Everything is better together. X

    1. Ellen, don’t be so hard on yourself. The hardest part was deciding to go the Keto route and you are going to do it together. I too have my husband to lean on, when I have “craved” icecream…but didn’t give in, because of my support system. It really is okay to indulge every now and again. For the record, the meal that you described really wasn’t all that bad except for the potatoes and candy. But, you have the right mindset and that’s the best part. That’s wonderful that he wants to join you. In regards to fasting, we do it all of the time and love it! I will be posting some of my favorite recipes….so stay tuned!   3. Never needed to diet because I have always led an active life and chose what i ate. I do see a lot of people following keto diet. Slowly avocado is becoming popular in this part of the world where it was once an exotic item
