I Remember When…

Where do I begin? I have so many memories locked away that I sometimes feel that the emotional wave of memories can cascade out, just like Niagara Falls. I have a coworker, Rose she is so very dear to my heart. Almost daily she and I will reminisce about so many things from growing up as young girls to young women “dancing the night away”! Those were the days!

The Good Old Days

Times have changed so much, that I feel that this generation of kids have absolutely no idea of what they’ve missed because of all of the “electronics” that are right at their fingertips. Growing up, we had so much more at our fingertips…….outside and nature…. that I really don’t think the “younger generations” can truly appreciate it. Most everything that we did for fun revolved around being outside.

Lightning Bugs!

Oh, wow…on a clear night they were everywhere! We would catch them and put them in a jar and watch the glow. They are soft-bodied beetles that are commonly called lightning bugs and also known as “fireflies: for their conspicuous use of bioluminescence during twilight to attract mates or prey. Did you know that an adult firefly will only live long enough to mate and lay eggs? They are very romantic with their flickering lights. Almost a peaceful relaxing feeling.

Small Town Values

I remember staying for many summers with my younger sister at my grandparent’s house. We never locked the doors and we could keep the windows open at night with the nice cool breeze blowing in. We never had any fears of not being safe.

We would run around outside and play for hours on end. Riding our bikes everywhere, playing kickball and chasing down the ice cream man!! Drinking water out of the garden hose and even riding in the back bed of a pick-up truck, and you know what? We lived to tell about it!

Really?

I remember when candy was a penny and you could turn in soda pop bottles for cash! I remember twirling around and around in the yard until you got dizzy and fell on the ground with the world whirling around you! I remember laying on the floor in our hallway with the long spiral telephone cord. Sometimes on occasion, you could just look down the hallway to see what bedroom door the cord ran under. We had two phones in our house a yellow one in the kitchen and a baby blue one in the hallway. Oh….we were stylin’!

I remember going out “Trick or Treating” and not having to check our candy, or worrying about the “right houses” to go to. Except for the “creepy” house in the neighborhood.

Things Remembered

Then There Was The Music

I remember playing 45 records on a record player and putting a penny on the arm when the record would skip. I was super excited when we bought the LP.

Even as a teenager growing up in the 70s, we would stay out late, radio blaring while “cruising” the streets or maybe just walking up and down the streets of our neighbor without a care in the world. We stayed out of trouble and trouble stayed away from us. But the music……if you’ve read any of my other posts, then you will know that I’m “Hooked-on-the-70s”

That 70’s music! From the Jackson 5, the Osmond Brothers, the Beatles, the Eagles, Elvis, the Rolling Stones, and Elton John…..the list goes on and on. I remember listening to the 8 track player in the car until the cassette player came out. You just haven’t heard “Rock and Roll” until it is played on your cassette player!! I remember going to concerts where the only thing tragic was the person in front of you that was blocking your view.

I remember the Monday night drive-in movie theatre, just a dollar per vehicle. The best movie I ever saw at the Gulfway Drive-In was, “Live and Let Die.” What a great movie and song.

School Days Gone Bye

I loved school, especially my Reading class. I remember riding that big yellow bus to and from school and dreading the fact that my stop was always one of the last to be picked up in the morning and last to be dropped off in the afternoon. I remember trying out for the drill team and can even remember the excitement that I felt when I made the team. I remember the very first “real” kiss that I had on that one hot summer day when I was going to be a freshman in high school. The fireworks! I’ll never forget that!! I still today even remember the feeling of heartbreak when he broke up with me, two years later.

I can remember some of the classes that I took, the teachers I had and the friends that I made. I remember rushing from my locker to my class before the tardy bell would ring, sometimes just barely making it in time.

I remember getting detention and thinking that it was the end of the world. I never let that happen again.

I remember my prom night and anxiously turning 18 at midnight. I remember the crazy “all-nighter” I pulled with one of my very best girlfriends, Sherry on prom night after we “ditched” our dates!! By the way, she and I are still BFF’s 40 plus years later. I remember the nervousness I felt when accepting my high school diploma in May 1979 and the sadness of knowing my high school days were coming to an end.

I Remember It All

As if it were yesterday…I remember it all. I remember that we made do with what we had. We didn’t have “Alexa” to give us the answers, we had the library and our Encyclopedias for that. We could make a dollar go a long way. I could practically fill the tank of my car with a dollar’s worth of gas. We could go to the movies, a concert, a restaurant, a school, and even church and never have to worry about our safety. We really had it all.

These memories and so many more are what have made me the woman that I am today. The memories have filled my heart and soul.

Cherish the moments, for one day they will become the memories that you will hold onto for a lifetime.
